Introduction to Strategic Design and Management
Parsons School of Design: School of Design Strategies
CRN: 14718
Credits: 3
We are living in a world characterized by growing social, environmental, economic and technological pressures, resulting in an uncertain and turbulent environment. Responding to emergent conditions that can quickly render old assumptions irrelevant, this course exposes students to theories, techniques, and mindset necessary for the effective navigation of volatile and rapidly-changing contexts. Students absorb a range of perspectives in management science and strategic design, tracing their evolution from project-level methods focused on problem-solving to much broader blueprints for enacting organizational and societal changes on multiple levels. In particular, the course presents strategic design and management not simply as a tactical framework for advancing near-term business goals, but as an approach for envisioning and managing the transformation of 21st-century organizations. Students explore innovation, strategy, and foresight from a sector-agnostic perspective, leveraging design principles and practices to frame problems, uncover possibilities, and support creative and agile decision-making. Assignments apply key course themes to current cases and help students to understand their own role within this emerging discipline.
