In this studio course, students engage with external partners from a wide range of industries and sectors, developing civic, social, environmental, technological, and economic innovations through the application of design methodologies and practices. Working in dedicated partner teams and responding to a design brief presented by the partner organization, students bring diverse backgrounds and disciplinary perspectives to bear on complex projects, leveraging individual skills and gaining practice in effective collaboration. This studio course involves students in a theoretically informed, design-driven research and prototyping process, leading to a proposed intervention. At the end of the term, student teams present their findings and proposals to colleagues, experts and partner representatives. The Strategic Design External Engagement Studio helps to prepare students for an independent research and development process undertaken in the second-year Capstone Studio course sequence.
