Advanced Visual Practicum
Spring 2021
Taught By: Christelle De Castro
Section: A1
CRN: 9603
Credits: 3
The fundamental objective of this course is to enable students to further develop their identity as visual artists, using photography and/or film as a method or means of expression and representation. This is not a course focused simply on learning the technical aspects of photography and film/video. Instead, the course will be focused on image making, a deep dive into the components that make up an image and the communication of ideas in our visual culture. Each student will be required to create original photography and videos that represent their core identity as designers, which will ultimately be displayed in a book, installation, website and/or social media channel. Ultimately, the public representation of a designer and their collection should be considered united with the work itself. Visual representation and design must be integrated and developed in parallel, and the process one employs in creating garments should be just as thoughtful as the process of representing them. We will look at representation throughout the field of photography and film, from fine art to commercial, and how both artists and designers/brands employ the same tools to represent themselves in contemporary visual culture.
