How can an exhibition showcase design to address complex questions like, for example, our relationship to waste? In this course, students will engage in curatorial practices at the intersection of art, technology, and ecology, and work towards an exhibition centered on the transformation of the Freshkills landfill site into a park. Located on Staten Island, Freshkills Park is the result of a vast “renaturing” process through which a gigantic trash burial facility was gradually covered by a new, human made/natural/landscaped environment. Working collaboratively with university and external partners (Sound the Mound, Field R/D, Freshkills Park Alliance), students will explore curatorial strategies, design prototypes, propose exhibition scenarios and mediation devices. We will engage with curators, artists, and designers. We will find ways to curate the preexisting material, prototypes, and installations developed in the context of Sound the Mound. Students will produce new narratives, explore the histories of the site, and gather knowledge from the communities of stakeholders concerned by Freshkills Park important urban renewal project. Hybrid in nature, this course will move between seminars, studio activities, guest interventions, and site visits, One of the main outcomes will be to develop curatorial components for an exhibition showcasing Sound the Mound projects and artistic contributions developed under Field R/D curatorial initiative.
