Fashion journalism is not just designer profiles or runway reviews. News magazines such as Time and the New Republic publish articles about the politics of the hijab, literary publications like n+1 include essays on clothes, and newspapers like the Wall Street Journal and New York Times run features on the industry's environmental and business impact. And with hundreds of lifestyle-focused websites and niche periodicals popping up, it has never been a more exciting time to write and consume fashion journalism. This course will deal with writing interesting, informative articles that can appeal to both the fashion cognoscenti and a general audience. Students will look at fashion reviews, trend pieces, and profiles, and delve into how the Internet has changed the way we write and think about fashion. Students will also learn how to develop story ideas and pitch editors, report and cultivate sources, and deal with PR representatives. The goal is to create a final piece that can be published.
