This course examines the relationship between theory and practice in education as they relate to teaching methodologies in art and design. It prepares students who are considering teaching in the field by exploring the foundations of pedagogy. This course examines and demonstrates teaching methods as well as discussions of important educational theories and leaders. In addition, the course discusses pedagogy, critiques, adult development, the impact of technology on the field, assessment, brain research, different learning environments, and current issues and debates in the field. Reflective writing, readings in educational theory, active discussions, class activities including the use of popular culture to explore teaching methods, the role of the educator, fieldwork, observation in classrooms, the creation of a syllabus and a teaching philosophy as well as class presentations are essential components for the successful completion of this course.
