This course sits at the intersection of craft and technology, textiles and electronics, softness and computation, storytelling and science fiction. Through core course modules, students will develop practical skills with a variety of smart materials including conductive threads, resistive fabrics, thermochromic ink, and muscle wire. Using these materials, you will learn how to construct custom sensors and actuators using traditional textile and craft techniques. Finally, you will embed these materials into various microcontroller circuits using bespoke connectors. Throughout the course, we will interrogate the values embedded in the conventional histories and contemporary uses of our materials and computational tools. Our aim is to craft alternative narratives, methods of making, and modes of expression that prioritize care and embrace emergence. If you are interested in craft, physical computing, history, tools, interface design, wearable technology, textiles, narrative design, performance, alt controllers, and/or education, this is a course for you. Note: This course assumes no prior knowledge, however, for students with experience in a particular area, there are built-in opportunities to deepen your expertise.
