Design and Urban Ecologies Studio 1
Parsons School of Design: School of Design Strategies
CRN: 2248
Credits: 6
This urban studio is structured as an interdisciplinary space centered on neighborhood-scale research, community planning, and collective action. Grounded in the principles of participatory action research, it prioritizes the lived experiences, embodied knowledge, and aspirations of community members throughout every phase of the research and planning process. Students conduct research that combines context-sensitive data analysis with non-extractive methods such as mapping, radical listening, and storytelling. Drawing on knowledge co-produced with residents, students help develop actionable strategies rooted in local visions for more livable, resilient, and just neighborhoods. Students work closely with residents, grassroots groups, and/or community-based organizations to co-produce tools, plans, initiatives, and policy campaigns that advance ongoing community efforts and long-term visions. The studio frames the neighborhood as a site of social and political struggle, shaped by intersecting histories of land, identity, and belonging. Key topics of the studio include neighborhood change, gentrification, displacement, and community control.
