Design and Urban Ecologies Studio 3
Parsons School of Design: School of Design Strategies
CRN: 2487
Credits: 6
This studio encourages students to become independent researchers and to envision actionable urban projects involving urban policy, planning, design, and activism. Using the methodologies and urban knowledge acquired in the first year of the program, students start working individually defining their own research according to their topic and context of interest. This studio will guide students to develop their own methodological and theoretical framework, as well as to design time-based strategies and socio-spatial scenarios leading to an specific urban intervention. Students are allowed to propose projects changing or creating new public policy; developing and implementing new public programs or community initiatives; transforming public space or urban infraestructures; envisioning new housing and development models; and changing organizational systems across communities, urban institutions and cities. Students address a variety of issues including environmental degradation, gentrification, spatial polarization, ethnic segregation, economic injustice, and infrastructural decline. Students are required to engage with grassroots groups, community-based nonprofit organizations, NGOs, municipal agencies, or political institutions. This studio establishes a foundation for thesis work.
