This course examines art’s engagement with capitalism as a logic and social structure, focusing on the dynamics of gender, race, and power across multiple spheres of life. We will explore how artists address the themes of value, Fordist and Post- Fordist production, social reproduction, affective labor, and the gendered and racialized division of work. Additionally, we will closely read theoretical texts from Feminist, Queer, Black and Decolonial Studies to gain an understanding of how gender, sexuality and race are mutually constructed and shaped by social hierarchies and institutions under capitalism. We will discuss seminal and contemporary works by a wide range of artists, filmmakers, and collectives, including: Lizzy Borden, rafa esparza, Mary Kelly, Jumana Manna, Allan Sekula, Santiago Sierra, El Teatro Campesino, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, Kara Walker, among others. Class sessions will privilege discussion and close readings of artworks, and we will experiment with in-class writing exercises, group presentations and other collaborative assignments. The following questions will drive our inquiry: How does capitalism structure our bodies, identities, and relationships? How have artistic practices and critical discourses challenged conventional divisions between differing bodies and sexualities, public and private spheres, and varying forms of labor? By undertaking this challenging and sustained analysis together, we will imagine ways to cultivate non-exploitative relationships and alternative forms of collectivity through creative practice and thought.

Open to: All university undergraduate degree students, juniors and seniors; others by permission. Pre-requisite(s): first-year university writing course and at least two prior history or methods courses in art, media, film, or visual culture. One of these courses should be 3000-level.
