Students dissatisfied with, or weary of, political, sociological and historical treatments of art and design may be gratified to learn of thinkers who regard these activities as autonomous enterprises, each with its own specifically different principles of practice and judgement. In this course we read several thinkers in this line, with special attention to treatments of music as music, film as film, architecture as architecture, painting as painting, and poetry as poetry. Readings may include Hanslick, On the Beautiful in Music; Perkins, On Film as Film; Scott on architecture; Gilson on the Fine Arts; and Arnold on poetry. Application of theories to specific objects will be determined by class interest.

Open to: University undergraduate degree students, freshman and sophomores only. Pre-requisite(s): first-year university writing course and at least one prior history or methods course in art, media, film, or visual culture.
