Parsons School of Design: Sch. Art and Dsgn Hist and Th
CRN: 14420
Credits: 3
The course will start by examining the roots of women artists in relation to feminism in the 19th century and will continue to explore the impact of second-wave feminism on art from the 1960s until today. Discussions of feminist art often limit themselves to a narrow Western perspective. This course aims to provide students with a transdisciplinary overview of feminism and art in a global context. Recent feminist art exhibitions have played a pivotal role in shaping global feminist discourse. We will delve into the strategies used in displaying and interpreting art objects. We will also explore the intricate relationship between feminism, gender, and sexuality, examining feminist theories in relation to art practices from both historical and contemporary perspectives. By drawing from feminist studies, gender studies, art history, and theory, we will critically assess how geography, ability, and class influence power dynamics and knowledge. As the course progresses, we will study aesthetic forms that offer alternative narratives to prevailing cultural norms, shedding light on the political construction of meaning within art. We will foster a non-hierarchical, definitively planetary outlook. Additionally, we will contemplate feminism's role in the realm of art: its historical resistance against patriarchal norms, the evolution of new geographies in feminist art practice, and the claiming of virtual territories on feminist fronts. Throughout, we will apply feminist theories such as intersectionality and postcolonialism, recognizing their historical, ethical, and political foundations. The artworks we explore will address feminist ethics concerning care, community, ecology, and diverse economies. Ultimately, this course will present a wide range of feminist art practices in a global context, promoting the horizontal exchange of ideas through art. Pathway: Art and Design History
