Digital Tools
Parsons School of Design: Sch. Art and Dsgn Hist and Th
CRN: 17506
Credits: 3
The course is taught collectively by School of Art and Design History and Theory (ADHT) faculty and Making Center staff. It combines studio instruction and seminars to teach practical skills in digital design and making, together with researching the history and theory of our global digital culture. Digital Tools is organized across five stages that intersect with each other to provide a wholistic understanding of digital processes, associated software and workshop facilities: 1) Computer-Aided-Design and Manufacturing CAD & CAM, 2) Laser Lab, 3) Scanning, 4) 3D-Printing, and 5) Computer Numerical Control Machinery (CNC). These five processes connect introductions to software with the prototyping of designs, so that you can move between virtual experiments, creative applications and rapidly realized objects. Planning and production exist in constant exchange, rather than through a one-directional progression from concept to result. The speed that results from engaging with digital tools also allows you to test prototypes-ideas, critically assesses them and then develop further concepts and designs from them. The accompanying historical and contextual seminars situate digital designing in the contemporary globalized environments of images (still and moving), sounds (composed and ambient) and critical texts (academic and fictions).
