Surveying the Screen: New York’s Film Festivals and Video Installations

This course will take advantage of the extensive film programming throughout New York and the prevalence of the moving image within galleries and alternative spaces. Particular focus will be placed on experimental documentaries, expanded cinema, and new media, highlighting the work of BIPOC, queer, and transgender filmmakers and video artists. Festivals and screenings include New Directors/New Films (ND/NF) at Lincoln Film Center, MoMA’s Docfornight, the New York Asian Film Festival, and the Tribeca Film Festival, as well as local independent cinemas such as Anthology Film Archives, Light Industry, Film Forum, and e-flux Screening Room. Other visits include The Kitchen, Pioneer Works, Performance Space, Museum of the Moving Image, and the Mela Foundation’s Dream House. Students will have the opportunity to meet with curators, film programmers, and time-based artists. Attendance at screenings and events outside of class time will be required.
