In this course we will investigate the material properties of the printed surface. Students will investigate the structural, functional, and qualitative aspects of substrates such as paper and its interaction with ink. Students will also learn how designers work with printers and the mechanics involved. Finally, we will interrogate different types of commercial print processes and examine the constraints and opportunities afforded by different production and post-production techniques to create meaning. Note: this course was previously offered under the title Package Design.

Open to: University undergraduate degree students, sophomores, juniors and seniors only. Some seats have been reserved for BFA Communication Design Students. Pre-requisite(s): PUCD 2025 Core 1: Typography Studio, or PSAM 1070 CD Foundations: Typography, or PACD 1100 Core 1: Typography.
