In this Printmaking class students will learn three basic techniques of etching a zinc plate: hard ground, soft ground, and aquatint as well as how to print with consistency and controlled variation. The objective for both beginning and advanced students is to provide a vocabulary of techniques to free students to explore the infinite possibilities of expression, from a three-dimensional textured surface to a flat minimal approach. There will be demonstrations in roll-up viscosity, Chine-colle and color printing. There will be a visit by either an artist or professional etcher. The class is open to beginning and advanced students.

To provide a foundation of printing from a Plexiglass plate by learning the different techniques of incising the plate in a multitude of ways to create an image which can be multiplied. Demonstrations and individual attention will be given to encourage realization of personal vision. Hands on exploration and printing will be enhanced by historical and contemporary references. Topics covered: working with tones, values, textures, and line; discussions on graphic, painterly, and linear usage; how artists have worked in these mediums; advantages, versatilities, and limitations of each technique. (Water-based inks will be employed) *All will need a working space of approximately 28” x36”.* Please note that there may be costs for materials up to $150 associated with this class. No students will be turned away from the class for an inability to pay this cost.
