Risograph and Self Publishing
Parsons School of Design: School of Art, Media, and Tech
CRN: 16018
Credits: 3
Independent publishing is more prevalent than ever as artists, designers, and small communities seek alternative methods to distribute their work outside of mainstream publishing channels. This introductory-level class will explore pre-to-post digital printmaking processes, with a focus on using the Risograph—a medium known for its affordability, accessibility, and historical ties to grassroots publishing, activism, and DIY culture. Utilizing the university's printing resources, students will be guided step by step in transforming their concepts into books and zines, engaging with key topics such as content vs. form, color theory, color separation, file setup, and strategies for documenting and distributing their work. While Risograph printing is just one approach within the broader independent publishing landscape, it is particularly relevant for artists and designers seeking to produce high-quality, small-batch publications with vibrant, layered visuals. Students will leave the class equipped with both technical skills and an understanding of how to navigate and contribute to independent publishing networks, from self-distribution to artist book fairs and community-driven print initiatives.
