In this course you will gain an introduction to the mechanics of editorial photography. You will further develop your skills operating a digital camera, with a focus on crafting compelling visual narratives through making dynamic photographic choices. Throughout the semester, you will photograph a series of editorial “assignments” which will be critiqued in class. Assignments will challenge you to develop a creative vision, tell a story, and curate your work for a range of editorial contexts. This course will expose you to magazines and digital outlets, as well as a wide breadth of contemporary photographers. You will learn key professional practices, including how to approach outlets, pitch stories, read contracts, write estimates and invoices, and work with art directors and clients. The course culminates in the production of a cohesive portfolio of images alongside a professional website and curated social media presence.
