In this Photo Concepts course, we explore the complex concept of the photograph as a document, beginning with the central question: Are all photographs documents? Through the study of influential photographers, artists, and critical texts, you will examine the many roles photographs can play—as witness, evidence, memory, and tool for activism. Practice-based assignments, a final photographic project, and oral presentations will give you the opportunity to engage with these ideas firsthand. you will also consider how the flexibility and manipulation of digital imagery reshape our understanding of photography as a document.
