This course explores the complex idea of the photograph as document, beginning with the question: Are all photographs documents? Through the study of key photographers, artists and relevant writings, students gain a broad perspective into the multiple ways the photograph manifests as document, including the photograph as witness, evidence, memory and activism. Practice-based assignments, a final photographic project and oral presentations encourage students to experience the meaning of the photograph as document, and how the malleability of the digital image changes that meaning.

Open to: All university undergraduate degree students. Pre-requisite(s): PUPH 2100 Core Studio 1: Photo Practices or PSAM 1050 Intro to Photo or PSAM 1060 Light & Image. Some seats have been reserved for Bachelor of Photography majors.
