Spring 2019

Taught By: Andrew Shurtz

Section: A

CRN: 6672

Credits: 3

In this class, students will explore ways of designing and producing books. We'll investigate fundamental design principles (layout, grids, typography) as well as the practical aspects of book production (developing projects, working with publishers, working within production constraints). We'll work on three main projects: an image-based photo book, and experimental grid-based book produced using inexpensive materials, and a large-scale book project. In addition, we will have a number of discussions based on given readings as well as lectures on historical and contemporary book design.

Open to: Bachelors degree in Communication Design majors, juniors and seniors only; others by permission of the program. Pre-requisite(s): PSAM 2070 Editorial Concepts.
