In this elective, we explore the realm of experimental video, delving into its poetic, perceptual, and material dimensions. As students immerse themselves in this unconventional genre, they will critically reassess established cinematic norms. The course unfolds with an examination of temporal and spatial dynamics, sequencing intricacies, narrative structures, viewer perceptions, political potentials, and the complications inherent in presenting time-based artwork. Engaging with curated reading materials and screenings, students will participate in discussions and undertake writing assignments to enrich their understanding and inform their creative projects. Throughout the semester, students will create several self-directed projects that encourage a departure from traditional mediums in both production and presentation. Proficiency in video camera operation and familiarity with editing software is necessary for this course.
