Photo Processes: Remixing the Camera
Parsons School of Design: School of Art, Media, and Tech
CRN: 18027
Credits: 3
In this studio course, students will design and tinker with digital cameras, remixing software and hardware, through which they will critically examine the fundamental technologies shaping contemporary photography. The course integrates critical theory with technical experimentation. Students will engage with contemporary scholarship on computational imaging and machine vision through readings and discussions. Over a series of assignments and projects, students will develop work that responds to how these technologies shape and are shaped by societal, cultural, and political forces. Through hands-on technical experimentation, students will be able to intimately explore emerging applications of digital photography, as well as subvert these technologies as forms of critical photographic practice. By engaging directly with the fundamental tools of their practice, students will make visible the biases, assumptions, and power relations embedded in imaging systems. From this foundation, they will propose alternative cameras that might serve different communities, bodies, and ways of knowing.
