Histories of racial representation powerfully shape our contemporary visual landscape. In this course, we will engage with photographs, artworks, and critical texts to closely consider the relationship between visual culture and race. We will explore the ethics of representation, the politics of in/visibility, and dynamics of identity and recognition. Through close-readings, writing assignments, screenings, and reflections on contemporary photography, we will examine an array of aesthetic and conceptual strategies that construct, reinforce, and dismantle dominant notions of race. Together, we will ask: Who gets to look, see and be seen? How do we approach image-making in relation to identity and power? How is photography entangled in legacies of settler colonialism and white supremacy, and how can our work as artists help to undo them?
