Theirstory: Exhibited Interiors Speak
Parsons School of Design: School of Constructed Env.
CRN: 17396
Credits: 3
Period Rooms, as exhibition spaces within museums or buildings, are assembled static representations (nouns) of human life at a particular location and time. Furthermore, as constructed [interior] environments, they are, at best, wonderfully immersive incomplete representations of human/non-human experience or, at worst, misrepresentations that actively conceal hidden narratives. This course highlights expanded historical archives, written and oral stories, and critical works, including issues of gender, people of color, the non-human, and environmental impacts related to the Period Rooms in existence today. Additionally, the course engages students by asking them to explore examples presented using artistic, design, design thinking, and emerging technology frameworks to analyze and consider expanded stories of the curated interior.
