Drawing and Painting: Representing Space
Parsons School of Design: School of Constructed Env.
CRN: 18190
Credits: 3
This course will investigate drawing and painting media as analog processes in the representation of our world. Students will employ traditional wet and dry drawing and painting mediums to produce work that captures landscape, cityscape, interior space and the study of objects (still life). Students will explore the contrasts and connections between New York’s towering buildings, bustling streets, interior spaces, iconic locations and the natural landscape that surrounds and permeates it. Students are invited to express the beauty and tension of this relationship, capturing scenes of pure natural vistas, densely built environments, or imagined worlds that blend these two realms. Classroom critiques combined with studio and plein air drawing and painting sessions will be a regular aspect of this course, challenging students to grapple with the complexities of representation in drawing and painting from direct observation. Though sometimes elusive, New York City’s landscape is profoundly shaped by nature—from its waterways and parks to its skyline views framed by open sky and water. Embrace this city’s unique canvas and create art that reflects the city where nature and urban life coexist.
