Material Mining and Design
Fall 2024
Taught By: Martina Kohler
Section: A

CRN: 17397

Credits: 3

This studio elective will test the potential of material mining to gain knowledge and develop design strategies towards a design process that begins where another process ended. Students will investigate and create a catalog of parts from an existing small scale installation. Working with that catalog, students are tasked to design new functional assemblages. During this process students will explore methods and new concepts of how to work with industrial elements that have already been altered. Gaining knowledge and an understanding from the reverse design process the second part of the semester will challenge students to respond to a specific design brief by addressing some of the encountered challenges when working with reclaimed materials. The project will be designed with future material mining and reversible details in mind.
