Open Play Lab explores “Design for Play” as a process as well as an outcome in industrial design. Students will design for playful outcomes with a focus on accessible and inclusive play. Using multiple platforms ranging from games, tools, toys, sensory experiences and learning materials, the class will tinker with ways to mediate playful interactions and inclusive play experiences. Drawing on foundational theories of play and education from figures like Froebel, Montessori and Piaget, students will work collaboratively to brainstorm, experiment, prototype, play test, fail, laugh, reflect, revise and refine designs that facilitate varied forms of play. Lectures, workshops, field trips and media on play advocacy and inclusive design will enhance students' understanding of designing for differences in play experiences.
