Build Your Own Factory

Spring 2019

Taught By: Dave Marin

Section: A

CRN: 3882

Credits: 3

More often than not, mass manufacturing technologies rely not on particularly complex or unattainable techniques, but on the optimization of very simple physical forces. This course will allow students to attain intimate, first hand understandings of manufacturing processes through the construction of factory technologies in benchtop scale. Students will build machines to recycle and reuse thermoform plastics and "mass produce" products within Parsons work spaces, exploring ways that production methods can be reinvented. The course will be focused on the build of the machinery, the testing and use of the equipment via limited production of students’ designs, and the recycling aspects of the project developing a collection program to create a supply chain of material. Students will beencouraged to consider how processes connect, integrate, and complement existing Making Center tools, equipment, and processes.

Open to: Junior and senior art and design majors. Pre-requisite: Basic knowledge of manufacturing processes and a minimum of moderate level skills in 3D making is strongly encouraged to meet course requirements.
