Live Build Project: Space as Matrix
Parsons School of Design: School of Constructed Env.
CRN: 15936
Credits: 3
In this course, students will create full-scale interior environments for an exhibition in the Aronson Galleries in 2025, exploring feminist, queer, and intersectional spatial practices. The exhibition will merge feminist design legacies with current architecture and interior design discourse. Functioning as both an archive and pop-up studio, it fosters collaboration among students, practitioners, and the public. Students will interpret the feminist concept of space as a matrix, challenging traditional spatial hierarchies and addressing social justice issues like racism, inequality, and climate change. Engaging with feminist archives, they’ll propose new interior and exhibition design approaches. The course emphasizes research, prototyping, and testing designs that evolve throughout the semester. The final installation will include mock-ups and prototypes, focusing on multifunctionality and flexibility. Visible from the street, the exhibition will provoke questions about inclusivity, asking who designs space and for whom, while promoting well-being and interdisciplinary collaboration.
