This course will require collaborative work between participating students and the New York Public Library’s Jail & Prison Services Program. The class will collaboratively design and fabricate two book carts to aid the NYPL in its book exchange program within NYC detention centers. Developed from conception, testing, and revision in collaboration with the NYPL, two full-scale functioning book carts will be fabricated by the end of the semester to be used by the NYPL in its Jail & Prison Services Program. Students will engage in research of the carceral system, interview users, review project precedents, propose and supervise fabrication of redesigned book carts that meet needs specific to the jails located on Rikers Island. Lectures will cover materials (wood/plastics/metals) and manufacturing processes common to furniture design and manufacture in service to this collaborative project.
