Ecotopian Tools for Multispecies Flourishing
Parsons School of Design: School of Constructed Env.
CRN: 16491
Credits: 3
This course explores ways in which the built environment can be a means for multispecies flourishing rather single-species domination. Engaged in deep thinking through intense making, the course explores digital and physical fabrication techniques to propose new tools for our contemporary moment that acknowledge the interconnectedness of the human with nonhuman lifeforms. In recognition that every human intervention in the environment affects the species and ecosystems of that environment, we acknowledge the more-than-human communities that are affected by human interventions and include them within the realm of our concern as designers. Against the apathy that can ensue with the realities of the ongoing sixth mass extinction, global warming, ocean acidification, flooding and drought, we will embrace the possibilities of ecological utopia -ecotopia- and the idea of a tool as a means to respond affirmatively to the moment. Together we will create a “toolkit” to address environmental issues that affect specific species, using analogue and digital prototyping techniques to iterate novel solutions. Experimentation, craft, and technique will be stressed through a series of design projects, which are supported by philosophical readings and student presentations. We will draw from ecofeminist scholarship as well as the philosophical work of Spinoza to provide a conceptual framework from which contemporary accounts of ecology and architecture can be contextualized and reframed.
