Designing for Disabilities: An Open-Source Approach
Parsons School of Design: School of Constructed Env.
CRN: 16492
Credits: 3
In this project-based course, students from various disciplines explore open-source adaptive design through the innovative framework of TOM: Tikkun Olam Makers, a nonprofit dedicated to social impact. TOM is a global movement of communities that create and share affordable design solutions addressing the neglected challenges of individuals living with disabilities, older adults, and those living in poverty. Students will gain hands-on experience with the TOM human-centered design methodology, which combines participatory design, frugal innovation, rapid prototyping and user testing. This includes an immersive exploration of research, documentation, and development practices to create impactful, custom-designed solutions for local unmet needs. Through partnership with local care centers and professionals, student teams will collaborate directly with “Need-Knowers”—community members with firsthand experience of specific challenges. Each team will conduct in-depth research to understand these needs, applying adaptive design principles to create functional, affordable prototypes that aim to improve the lives of their assigned Need-Knowers. For their final projects, students will deliver a working prototype directly to their Need-Knower as well as publish their product files as open-source resources on the TOM global platform. This contribution allows others worldwide to replicate and refine these solutions, joining a global network of TOM Makers dedicated to advancing accessibility through shared knowledge and skills. Students with backgrounds or interests in industrial and product design, engineering, fashion design, robotics, health sciences and more are encouraged to apply and will be grouped together to create multidisciplinary problem-solving design teams.
