The democratization of mixed reality technology opens up discussions on new alternative and collaborative spaces that aspire to facilitate global exchanges from our distributed embodied locations and digital space. The recent conversation on the Metaverse invites us to rethink digital spaces as constructs of human experience. We engage the potential for mixed reality to present spaces of alterity within the built environment. Through creative exploration of space, we reveal what was negated, concealed, erased, lost, forgotten. We move beyond representation and engage in immersive experiences from multiple points of view, facilitating interaction between different spaces and groups of people across cultural boundaries. What is the potential of an object or space to act as a palimpsest to multiple spaces and time? To engage political or social spheres and content that amplifies an existing object, space, and civic arena. To create a new civic space in mixed reality? How can mixed reality act as a portal between these spaces and experiences in relationship to larger issues around social and climate concerns? How do we embed chance encounters within our environments that create an interface to collaboration around ethical and political questions? How can we use mixed reality to reveal what is beneath the surface, giving space their own agency beyond human inhabitation? Explore mixed realities and critical design practices within a collaborative and inter-disciplinary context. We experimentally mix physical objects, materials, digital fabrication, wearable and mobile technology, interiors, architectural elements, and civic spaces with mixed reality. Basic knowledge of digital, 3d modeling software and physical model making is recommended. While some experience in these tools and programming languages will be helpful for this course, it is not necessary, as long as there is a willingness to learn the basics.
