In this course, students are introduced to the basic tools and practices used in sewing and construction with a special focus on alternative outputs, which may include a combination of garments, fine art applications and constructed environments. Students will be introduced to the work of artists and designers who occupy spaces at the intersection of fashion, art and architecture. While exploring basic tools, materials and practices associated with sewing, students will begin by sketching their initial ideas based on a self-identified theme. The sketches will be developed into 3D prototypes via pattern drafting, draping, and basic construction techniques. Students will be asked to experiment across a range of materials. Students will create a final project that incorporates the key components and methods of technical design and structural form.
