Integrated Sewing
Parsons School of Design: School of Design Strategies
CRN: 14263
Credits: 3
In this course, students are introduced to the basic tools and practices used in sewing and construction with a special focus on alternative outputs, which may include a combination of garments, fine art applications and constructed environments. Students will be introduced to the work and practice of artists and designers who occupy spaces at the intersection of fashion, art and architecture. This will be further supported by key lectures articulating innovative and creative processes for developing the student’s ideas. While exploring basic tools, materials and practices associated with sewing, students will be expected to embrace experimentation and an openness to working with a range of materials, as well understanding the translation from 2D to 3D incorporating pattern making properties for their potential outcomes. Students will create a final project that integrates the key components and methods of technical design and structural form.

Students will be introduced to the work of artists and designers who occupy spaces at the intersection of fashion, art and architecture. While exploring basic tools, materials and practices associated with sewing, students will begin by sketching their initial ideas based on a self-identified theme. The sketches will be developed into 3D prototypes via pattern drafting, draping, and basic construction techniques. Students will be asked to experiment across a range of materials. Students will create a final project that incorporates the key components and methods of technical design and structural form.
