Thinking on Paper
Parsons School of Design: School of Design Strategies
CRN: 19628
Credits: 3
This course is about paying attention to the world and learning to pay attention to what we're paying attention to. A rigorous practice of thinking on paper is essential for illustrators and painters, architects and anthropologists, strategists and stage-designers: anyone who recognizes that when we see the world as both collaborator and context, we're better able to produce work that works. We'll learn from how past and current attenders of the world leverage their sketchbooks, notebooks, and field journals to inspire new work, clarify opinion, and reveal personal voice. We'll borrow strategies from seventeenth-century commonplace books, monastic marginalia, Fluxus games, journalism, stage direction, street photography, and more to document our observations and think critically about what we notice. The semester culminates in a curated publication and portfolio-ready presentation that demonstrate the value of thinking on paper to robust personal, professional, and creative practices. This is a 100% analog class.
