Fiction is full of design. Authors build worlds by conveying design in myriad details - the embroidery on a garment, the height of a building, the click of a ballpoint pen, a sign in a window, the color of a room. Reading design in literature can expand the designer’s vocabulary and provide inspiration for their own making practices. In this course, students read works of historical fiction, science fiction, narrative fiction, and poetry, finding design, pausing to reflect, making their own versions of the designs in the stories, and authoring a short work of fiction that synthesizes the experience.
