Financial Futures: Funding Systems Change
Parsons School of Design: School of Design Strategies
CRN: 17981
Credits: 3
Money is a design material. This course teaches you to work with it. Financial instruments don't just describe organizations. They make them. Through hands-on diagnostic methods, you'll learn to see budgets, funding agreements, and financial statements as devices that construct what counts as value, who holds power, and what futures become possible. Working with live cases from civil society organizations navigating sudden funding collapse and cases of systemic investment, you'll develop Financial Futures Maps: tools that surface hidden constraints, reveal strategic options, and frame decisions. You'll map funding ecosystems and prototype revenue strategies that build coalitions and momentum toward coherent theories of change. No finance background required. For students who haven't touched a spreadsheet in a while, or ever, you'll build fluency in budgets, revenue models, and capital structures without jargon or math without context. You'll leave able to look at any organization or effort to make change and ask: who pays for this, what does it cost, and what does the money make?
