Indigenous Methodologies
Parsons School of Design: School of Design Strategies
CRN: 17983
Credits: 3
This course examines research as grounded in Indigenous theory, worldviews, and relationships to Land and more-than-human relations. Drawing from Indigenous epistemologies and methodologies across Abya Yala and Turtle Island, students engage frameworks such as relational accountability, comunalidad, desire-based research, Land pedagogies, sumaq kawsay, refusal, Indigenous data sovereignty, and more. The course examines research both within settler colonial institutions such as universities and in forms of knowledge production and education that emerge beyond those borders—within community movements, land-based practices, collective organizing, and intergenerational learning. Through critical readings, radical co-resistance and solidarity, and collaborative design-oriented exercises, students develop a land-based methodological framework for their own projects. Ultimately, the course is an invitation to collectively refuse extractive research practices and to creatively build methods serving radical Indigenous futures.
