Intergenerational Design
Parsons School of Design: School of Design Strategies
CRN: 17123
Credits: 3
If Maria Montessori designed the tools and environments to meet the cognitive and physical stages of children, how might we take this a step further by creating developmentally-appropriate designs that foster the social integration of individuals of various ages? Drawing on contemporary examples and historical precedents of intergenerational design, this course examines the power of design to transform New York City and The New School into a life-long learning campus. In a second case study, students and stakeholders will explore the opportunity of design to transform Mar de Plata, a beachtown city in Argentina, into what Joseph Coughlin refers to as a “longevity hub.” This course engages students in the full range of design-research methodologies from hands-on prototyping to sketching to service design.
