Radical Podcasts: Critical Storytelling with Audio Tours
Parsons School of Design: School of Design Strategies
CRN: 14896
Credits: 3
In this course, students will work in groups to develop a 15-minute podcast/audio project that connects to space and place in a radical way, whether through content, method, or framing. The focus of the audio narratives is on the urban environment, and students can develop their story using an issue they are familiar with, or by using the thematic and spatial prompts shared in class. The history of audio storytelling will also be introduced, particularly its contribution to radical forms of documentation and the dissemination of information. Students will acquire concept development and production skills, develop their work through a collaborative audio production process and engage with the ethical and alternative nature of podcasting and audio storytelling. Groups will develop additional materials to accompany their podcasts (such as maps and descriptions) that highlight a critical aspect of their chosen location - for example, erased or forgotten histories, hidden infrastructures, or traces of resistance. Selections will be featured on WNSR, the New School radio station.
