This course introduces students to the fundamentals of digital fashion design and garment creation using industry-standard 3D fashion software, including CLO 3D. Focusing on foundational technical skills and creative digital workflows, students will learn how to develop garments from concept to completion within a virtual environment. Through hands-on exercises and design projects, students will build an understanding of digital patternmaking, garment construction, virtual sewing, fabric simulation, fitting, texture application, rendering, and animation. The course emphasizes the use of digital technologies as contemporary tools for fashion design development, allowing students to experiment with ideas efficiently while reducing material waste, excessive sampling, and unnecessary production during the early stages of the design process. Students will also explore how digital fashion practices can support more inclusive and adaptable approaches to design across diverse body types, identities, genders, and sizes. As an introductory studio course for undergraduate fashion design students, the class focuses on developing both technical proficiency and creative problem-solving through step-by-step garment creation and iterative design processes. By the end of the semester, students will produce portfolio-ready digital fashion projects that demonstrate foundational skills in digital garment construction, visualization, and contemporary fashion communication.
