This course will survey Indigenous Fashion from a contemporary perspective. Students will explore how Indigenous fashion designers are reinterpreting traditional dress and techniques, while keeping traditional practices alive, and honoring ancestral knowledge. This course will highlight some of the leading Indigenous fashion designers of today and how they are bringing ancestral craft practices and worldviews into contemporary contexts. Through their work, Indigenous designers are revolutionizing fashion systems, reclaiming cultural memory and transforming the world into a more inclusive and sustainable space. Students will leave with a better understanding of fashion as a form of community, fashion as politics, and fashion as harmony with the natural world. This course is part of a series of courses centering Indigenous knowledge, Land-based practices, and fashion systems.
