In this studio course, students will explore classic tailoring techniques. The process of applying appropriate hand and machine skills in the complete execution of a tailored notch-collar jacket will be emphasized. Students will work from an existing jacket pattern, be guided through fabric selection in woolens and linings, and learn layout and cutting. Utilizing specific hand and machine sewing techniques, a full canvas construction will be used to build shape into the garment. Welt pockets will be constructed and applied to the jacket front. Finishes, such as shoulder pads and linings, will be executed to complete the jacket. Archival clothing details may be referenced during class. Through lectures and demonstrations, students will be able to evaluate different levels of quality in tailored garments that include hand and machine stitching. The course may include a field trip. Throughout the semester, the course invites students to reflect on the importance of handcraft tailoring techniques and bespoke tailoring as a business model in the context of 21st century fashion and society.
