This course explores inclusive design practices with a focus on fashion for larger bodies. Students will engage with ideas from the field of Fat Studies to better understand the social, cultural, and industry dynamics that shape plus-size fashion. Through research, discussion, and hands-on design work, students will critically examine how current approaches to plus-size clothing often reinforce negative stereotypes and stigma. Students will be challenged to rethink conventional design norms by centering larger bodies as a source of creativity, beauty, and innovation. The course emphasizes inclusive, identity-conscious design that values comfort, self-expression, and the lived experiences of people in larger bodies. By the end of the course, students will have developed and prototyped a garment that thoughtfully addresses both fit and aesthetics for a plus-size wearer, incorporating an understanding of intersectionality and body diversity. Students will also begin to build a personal philosophy around inclusive and body-positive design.
