Sensory Design Studio
Parsons School of Design: School of Fashion
CRN: 14866
Credits: 3
This course explores methodologies and practices of embracing and celebrating all forms of disabilities. We learn to shift the perceptions of disabilities as strengths and generative opportunities that aid innovation in design. We redefine disabilities and their perceptions by reframing the narrative of difference as a valid experience to learn from. Students gain fluency in critical disability theory, culture, and discourses, through performances, conversations, discussions, and shared embodied experiences of disabled artists, scholars, and leaders. Students will also learn, from scholarly work, theories and philosophies pertaining to disability, such as phenomenology of perception and sensory adaptations. Based on their foundations and redefinitions of disability, students will each create a product, textile, wearable, or art piece, that elevates, exaggerates, and emphasizes their discoveries of disabilities. Students are encouraged to employ any tools or assistive technologies to succeed in the creation of their work.
