This course introduces students to the nature of materials and their direct application in buildings from a spatial, environmental, health, and tectonic perspective. Materials are considered for their physical properties, environmental impact, phenomenological effect, historical and contemporary cultural significance, health, and for their particular use in contemporary building design. Students will learn to consider the impact of material choice and assembly methods on people, natural environments, and climate throughout the building’s lifecycle. Assignments will be individual and team based and will include field trips to building sites.

Open to: Architecture majors only. Co-requisite: PUAD 2011 Design Studio 2.
