Core Studio 1: 2D will offer students across 15 weeks a deeper exploration into the fundamentals of 2-dimensional media. Building on 2D skills introduced in First Year, this course will investigate a delimited but non-prescriptive constellation of elements that serve as essential 2D materials, techniques and formal compositional structures. Various sections of Core Lab 1: 2D offered within and across different semesters will cluster distinct combinations of three different 2D media: e.g., painting, drawing, printmaking; or painting, drawing, photography. Students will receive basic technical instruction in each of the three media, and then will be encouraged to address any given assignment through a range of these media. Through integrated readings and discussions, technical skill sets and historical awareness of 2D media will be taught side by side. A working knowledge of the histories behind each medium will also be taught and there will be an emphasis on developing a stronger visual vocabulary associated with each medium.
