Core Studio 1: 2D will offer students across 15 weeks a deeper exploration into the fundamentals of 2-dimensional media. Building on 2D skills introduced in First Year, this course will investigate a delimited but non-prescriptive constellation of elements that serve as essential 2D materials, techniques and formal compositional structures including painting, drawing, digital media and collage. Students will receive basic technical instruction and encouraged to address assignments through a range of these media. Through integrated readings and discussions, technical skill sets and historical awareness of 2D media will be taught side by side. A working knowledge of the histories behind each medium will also be taught and there will be an emphasis on developing a stronger visual vocabulary associated with each medium.
