Core Studio 2: Topics in 4D
Parsons School of Design: School of Art, Media, and Tech
CRN: 1959
Credits: 3
This class explores the intersections of performance art, time-based processes, and installation, with textile work. Students will engage with a variety of textile making techniques including weavings, tapestries, fiber arts, inflatables, and wearable sculptures. We will focus on the collision of traditional textile craftsmanship with global trajectories in contemporary art, through the lens of astrological cycles. Through hands-on workshops students will learn making skills such as natural/synthetic fabric dyeing, sewing, weaving, and collage. Students will implement these techniques and incorporate them into their own performative objects and installations. Students will research artists that have pushed the boundaries of textile, including: Cecilia Vicuna, Nick Cave, Ann Hamilton, to harness what they learn when creating their own work. The class will combine presentations on artists and short readings with prompt-driven projects that lead up to independent work. Collectively we will follow lunar cycles and respond through embodied movement, exercises, and creative work.
